The
XX punch has been made for decades, has oodles of different punches
available for it, and is really tight so if you need close tolerance
holes, the punches to do it are available and they will punch
those square shaped holes. It takes forever for the mechanism
to loosen up, so it does take a strong arm to both hold it in
place and then punch with it. If you can make the hole with the
no.5 punch, it is a lot easier but for odd shaped holes and for
more power, the XX is the punch for all time.

I
must give this testimonial. I bought my hand punch almost 20 years
ago and have used it on all types of jobs through the years. Only
once have I had a die break and that was because a helper once
dropped it on cement. It works as well as the day I bought it.
Up until this last January, I still had it in the original plastic
case (yes, with care it too survived all these years on construction
jobs) with all of the original dies I bought with it. In January
of this year I suffered a house fire in which I lost everything.
After the fire I sifted through the ashes and gathered the blackened
remnants of any tools I thought might be usable if cleaned or
worked on. I came across my whitney punch and put it in the box
with the rest of the things I found including some of the loose
dies I found in the ashes. Needless to say, there was no sign
of the melted plastic case other than the gunk that was melted
around parts of the punch in solid globs. I ran across it the
other day as I was cleaning tools and decided to see if it was
salvageable. I chipped away the solid gunk, cleaned the remaining
rust and residue from the tool with a wire wheel on a bench grinder
and sprayed a little WD-40 on the moving parts and guess what?
It was a little stiff at first but loosened up with a little determined
manipulation. The rubber handle were melted off, the case is gone
and I don't know yet whether the heat of the fire damaged the
temper of the dies, but the punch itself made a full recovery
and now works once again as good as it did the day I bought it.
This demonstrates and is a tribute to the quality of your product
and I thought you should know about it. I can truly say that I
am proud to own a tool of that high of a quality and durability.
I will update you later as to whether the dies held up under such
harsh heat treatment and can still perform their function without
bending or breaking.

No.
5 JR HAND PUNCH - Sheet metal is a little hard to punch with it,
but it is very accurate since you can see through the bottom to
line up your mark & hole. Very solidly built - stronger than
most tools I use, and even when you wear out the punch you like
most, all you do is replace the worn piece! Needs to include limitations
for materials it is to be used on, I almost had to stand on the
thing to punch 1/8" sheet aluminum. oh and take off the depth
spacer, it makes too much of a thumb slicer if you catch it right.
thankfully only my thumbnail got caught.
